Pet Surgery

Essex Animal Hospital is equipped with an advanced surgical suite and trained veterinarians who perform a variety of general surgical procedures. We provide safe surgical procedures for your dog or cat including:

General Surgery: General (or soft tissue) surgery is associated with the skin and tissue. Soft tissue surgery includes tumor removal, cystotomy, intestinal foreign body removal, splenectomy, C-section, spay/neuter, and more.

Dental Surgery: We perform some types of dental surgery such as tooth extraction, oral tumor removal, and fracture repair.

Emergency Surgery: Typical emergency surgeries we perform are wound repair, laceration repair, and foreign object removal.

Prior to Surgery

We carefully examine each pet prior to surgery. Anesthetic drugs are individually selected for the pet based on their age, breed, medical history, and the procedure that will be performed. We strongly recommend that every patient have pre-anesthetic blood tests to evaluate their internal organ function to ensure that the pet is a good candidate for anesthesia.

During Surgery

Our staff will ensure that your pet is safe and as comfortable as possible throughout the entire surgery. Your pet’s vital signs will be carefully monitored by a trained technician – all animals that undergo surgery will have their blood pressure, heart rate, rhythm, and blood oxygen levels monitored to keep your pet safe during the entire process.

Post-Surgical Care

Your pet’s post-operative pain management plan will include pain medication to reduce discomfort and encourage a speedy recovery. The plan may also include at-home pain medication to keep them as comfortable as possible. Our knowledgeable staff will walk you through every step and explain everything you need to know for post-surgery care at home.
