Cryotherapy is the application of cold over an injury or area of the body that is in the stage of healing and recovery. These cold applications are commonly used in conjunction with other veterinary treatments, and are typically used before or after exercise to relieve pain, increase circulation, promote relaxation, increase tissue extensibility, and minimize inflammation.
At Essex Animal Hospital, we use cryotherapy during the initial stage of inflammation, which is typically felt up to 72 hours after an injury. However, our veterinarians can also use the cold applications after this period when there is a case of limited mobility or lameness. Cryotherapy is highly beneficial in reducing inflammation, muscle spasms, and excess fluid buildup within the tissues.
If your pet is suffering from pain, inflammation, or limited mobility please call us at (519) 776-7325 to discuss the benefits of cryotherapy.
