Electrical Stimulation

At Essex Animal Hospital, we provide Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, which is a technique that is used to stimulate the nerves. The electrical stimulation promotes muscle strengthening, range of motion, and decreases inflammation and pain. This technique is very successful in treating neurological conditions, managing post-operative pain, and treating muscle weakness.

How Does Electrical Stimulation Work?

During a session of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, electrode pads are placed on the targeted muscle groups to stimulate them causing muscle contractions. A low level electrical current safely creates these muscle contractions, and many times it is a relaxing experience for pets.

Benefits of Electrical Stimulation

Pets that require pain management or those who are recovering from back or neck surgery will experience a number of benefits from treatments such as:

  • Prevention of muscle atrophy
  • Rehabilitation and strengthening of the muscles
  • Pain reduction
