Canine Aquatic Therapy
Dr. Jan takes Sonnee for his first therapeutic swim in our pool.

Essex Animal Hospital offers an indoor heated chemical free pool and hydrotreadmill for our aquatic therapies.

Aquatic therapy is appropriate for:

.
.
.
.

post operative orthopedic procedures
neurological conditions
osteoarthritic patients
obese patients

Using the pool allows the dogs to start the rehab process earlier than normal since they are in a weightless environment.

Using the hydrotreadmill allows the dog to return muscles to normal strength earlier and safer than other types of rehab.  As an added benefit, the warm water of the pool helps enhance the healing process.

Depending on the patient's therapeutic goals, the underwater treadmill and/or swimming pool can be used. The underwater treadmill promotes controlled weight bearing by varying the water level. The swimming pool is a non-weight bearing environment, especially effective for osteoarthritis and weakness associated with neurological conditions. Exercising in the water is a low impact activity that helps to improve strength, range of motion and endurance. The buoyancy properties of water minimize weight bearing stress to the joints which helps to prevent tissue injury, inflammation and pain.

Swimming Sessions
Our 12 x 20 ft. indoor, chemical free, heated Aqua Therapy & Fitness Pool is available for swimming sessions as well. All sessions are by appointment only and are directly supervised by our staff at all times. Owners are welcome to watch from the observation area or to participate with their pet. Senior pets can also benefit from such exercise. Emphasis is placed on safety and fun for the dogs.

Sonnee & Lily enjoy a fun swim in our heated, salt water pool.
